Uar Bernard had trouble putting on his helmet at his first NFL practice.

Sound familiar?

It's the same story as Jordan Mailata, who went from Australian rugby to All-Pro left tackle. Now Bernard, a Nigerian basketball player turned defensive tackle, is following the same International Player Pathway that produced one of the NFL's best linemen.

The Journey

Bernard's football story started in 2024 when former Giants and Falcons defensive end Osi Umenyiora invited him to an NFL camp in Nigeria. The physical tools were obvious:

  • 6'4", 306 pounds
  • 6% body fat
  • 4.63 40-yard dash (elite for his size)
  • 39-inch vertical jump

He'd never played a down of organized football.

"A Dream Come True"

"It's a dream come true for me because I've worked hard for this," Bernard said after being drafted. "I've not played football, but I've gone through some drills that made me believe that I'm going to get better every day."

"I thank God for everything. I thank God for life. I thank God for the opportunities he's given to me to be drafted by the Eagles."

The Development Plan

Coach Nick Sirianni called Bernard "a blank slate that you are able to teach things to."

The Eagles placed the international player exemption on Bernard, guaranteeing his roster spot for 2026. He'll learn behind Jalen Carter, Milton Williams, and Moro Ojomo, essentially a redshirt year.

Why This Could Work

The Mailata comparison isn't hyperbole. Bernard has:

  • Elite athletic testing numbers
  • Rare physical tools
  • Time to develop behind proven veterans
  • A coaching staff experienced in developing international players

Bernard wears number 93, the same number Milton Williams made cool. The next great Eagles defensive lineman might be wearing it.
