When asked to describe his playing style, Eagles third-round pick Markel Bell didn't sugarcoat it.

"It ain't gonna be pretty all the time, but I got the job done."

That one sentence perfectly encapsulates the massive offensive tackle from Miami. He's raw, he's unpolished, and he knows it. But he's also 6-foot-9, 346 pounds with a 36-3/8 inch arm length and 87-1/8 inch wingspan that put him in the 98th percentile among NFL offensive linemen.

Physical Traits You Can't Teach

Bell's sheer size disrupts pass-rush geometry in ways that smaller tackles simply cannot replicate. Defenders have to travel farther around him, giving quarterbacks precious extra milliseconds.

Despite his massive frame, Bell shows surprising lateral agility and footwork, particularly effective on screen passes. He's developed a sophisticated outside-hand-first striking technique to compensate for the leverage disadvantages that come with his height.

The Work Ahead

Bell's weaknesses are notable. His high center of gravity makes him susceptible to speed-to-power moves. His footwork in pass protection can be inconsistent. And with only 21 career FBS starts, he hasn't faced consistent elite competition.

Perhaps the biggest challenge: Bell played exclusively at left tackle in college. Moving to right tackle requires rebuilding instincts from scratch.

A Calculated Gamble

Some analysts had Bell rated as a fourth-round prospect. By the time Philadelphia picked in Round 3, Bell was likely the last prospect on the board with a legitimate starter ceiling.

This is a boom-or-bust selection. If Bell can refine his technique behind Lane Johnson, he has the physical tools to be a franchise tackle.
