Jordan Mailata owes his NFL career to Jeff Stoutland. He's not about to disrespect either man by comparing them.
'Heartbroken'
When Stoutland announced he was stepping down as Eagles offensive line coach after 13 seasons, Mailata didn't hide his emotions.
"Heartbroken. Pretty glad I'm here," Mailata said during offseason workouts. "This is a welcomed business for me because I haven't time to think about all that's going on. I've welcomed it with open arms because I can't think about it."
The connection runs deep. Stoutland took a seventh-round rugby player from Australia who knew nothing about football and turned him into a second-team All-Pro left tackle and Super Bowl champion.
No Comparisons
When asked about comparing Stoutland to new coach Chris Kuper, Mailata was direct: the two shouldn't be compared.
It's the right answer. Stoutland is a Hall of Fame-caliber coach who helped the Eagles reach three Super Bowls and win two championships. Following that act is nearly impossible.
The Kuper Question
Kuper arrives with questions. His four years in Minnesota were rough - the Vikings ranked last in interior pressure rate allowed in three of those seasons. They used 25 different offensive line combinations in 2025 and allowed 60 sacks.
But former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum offered a vote of confidence: "Jeff Stoutland was great, and Chris Kuper is going to be really good. I worked with him in Miami. He is going to be rock solid."
Why Stoutland Left
The Eagles offered Stoutland a chance to stay and work with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. He declined. Reports suggest the prospect of coaching in a different system, combined with frustrations from the 2025 season, led to his decision.
After 13 years and two Super Bowl rings, Stoutland earned the right to walk away on his own terms.
Moving Forward
Mailata isn't dwelling on what was. He's focused on what's next.
With Lane Johnson determining whether he'll return for a 14th season and a new voice in the room, the Eagles offensive line enters 2026 in transition. Mailata will be expected to lead - both on the field and in helping Kuper establish his credibility.
Stoutland built something special. Now it's up to Kuper to maintain it.
