The Philadelphia Eagles have picked up the fifth-year option on Jalen Carter's contract, keeping the two-time Pro Bowler under contract through 2027. But the bigger question now is when the team will lock up their star defensive tackle to a long-term extension.

Schefter's Update

ESPN's Adam Schefter was asked about potential new contracts for both Carter and quarterback Jalen Hurts. While he had not heard anything about Hurts, Schefter indicated the team wants to work out a new deal with Carter soon.

"I haven't heard about Jalen Hurts being extended and Jalen Carter, I think they're going to want to get to that," Schefter said.

Contract Projections

According to CBS Sports' Joel Corry, the starting point for serious contract discussions with the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle should be $32.5 million per year. That would make Carter the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the NFL on a per average annual basis.

A.J. Brown Trade Connection

Interestingly, an A.J. Brown trade could directly benefit Carter's contract situation. Pro Football Focus NFL reporter Bradley Locker noted that if the Eagles trade Brown, they automatically have more money available to pay Carter.

Dominant Career

Carter's impact in Philadelphia has been felt since Day 1. His career numbers include 121 quarterback pressures, 108 total tackles, 13.5 sacks, and 12 passes defensed. He was a key contributor to the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX victory.
