DeVonta Smith is ready to take first-round pick Makai Lemon under his wing.

When asked about mentoring the Eagles' newest receiver, Smith's response was simple and genuine:

"Whatever he needs, he can ask me. I'm not going to try to get in his way. If he needs me, I'm there for him."

The Slim Reaper's Approach

Smith has always been known for his quiet leadership and work ethic. He's not the type to demand attention or talk about himself. But when it comes to helping a young teammate, he's all in.

Lemon, selected 20th overall after the Eagles traded up with the Cowboys, is expected to compete immediately for playing time in the slot. Having a mentor like Smith - a Heisman Trophy winner who has produced three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons - could accelerate his development significantly.

The Perfect Role Model

Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin, who trains with Smith in the offseason, summed up why Smitty is the perfect mentor:

"Just an authentic, genuine dude. His work ethic speaks for itself. But he's just the same person every single day, cool with everybody. To be so accomplished and be so prepared, he's extremely down to earth."

What It Means for Lemon

With A.J. Brown's future uncertain amid trade speculation, Lemon may need Smith's guidance sooner rather than later. The rookie could find himself in a significant role from day one if Brown is dealt.

Fortunately, he's in good hands. Smith's combination of elite production, quiet professionalism, and genuine willingness to help makes him the ideal mentor for any young receiver entering the NFL.
