The 9th annual Eagles Autism Challenge presented by Lincoln Financial raised over $16 million on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. The signature cycling and 5K run/walk event brought thousands of participants together to raise money for autism research and care programs. It was the largest fundraising total in the event's history.
Record-Breaking Total
This year's total of more than $16 million sets a new high-water mark for the event, building on last year's $10 million result. Since 2018, the Eagles Autism Foundation has now invested more than $56 million to fund autism research projects and community grants. The foundation has become one of the most impactful charitable arms of any professional sports franchise.
One hundred percent of participant-raised funds benefit the neurodiverse community through cutting-edge autism research and care programs. The structure matters: most charity events lose 20% to 30% of donations to operating costs. The Eagles Autism Challenge has built its operational budget through corporate sponsorship and team funding, so participant dollars go directly to the cause.
Event Activities
The day's events included multiple courses designed to accommodate participants at every level:
- Wawa Hoagie 10-Mile Ride. Participants navigated through the City of Philadelphia and its suburbs on a course that has become a signature element of the event.
- FreedomPay 5K Run/Walk. A certified US Track and Field course that brings together competitive runners and casual walkers in the same event.
- West Sensory Walk. A shorter course around Lincoln Financial Field designed for families and participants with sensory challenges. This activity reflects the foundation's commitment to inclusive event design.
The Why
Autism research and care funding has historically been underweighted relative to the prevalence of autism in the population. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States is now identified as having an autism spectrum diagnosis. Funding for research, support services, and community programs has not kept pace with the need.
The Eagles Autism Foundation was created to address that gap. Founder Jeffrey Lurie, the Eagles' owner, has made autism research and support one of the central pillars of the team's community work. The annual fundraising challenge is the most public expression of that commitment, but the foundation's year-round work funds research labs, family support programs, and education initiatives across the Philadelphia region and beyond.
The Eagles Family Effect
Eagles players, coaches, alumni, and front-office staff participated in the event alongside thousands of fans and members of the broader Philadelphia community. The visibility of the players matters: when Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and other roster stars are seen cycling and walking for the cause, it amplifies the message and recruits new participants to future events. Several Eagles alumni who have personal connections to autism (whether through their own families or friends) have made the event part of their annual calendar.
More Than Football
The Eagles organization continues to lead the way in autism awareness and support across the NFL. The annual Autism Challenge represents the best of what Philadelphia sports can accomplish when the community comes together for a cause bigger than the game. The Eagles have built a franchise identity around competitive excellence on the field and community impact off it. The Autism Foundation is a flagship of the latter.
For families navigating an autism diagnosis, the funding from this event makes a real difference. For researchers working on diagnostic tools, intervention programs, and support services, the foundation's grants are often the difference between a project moving forward and a project getting shelved. For the community at large, the visibility of the event normalizes conversation around neurodiversity in ways that change how people approach the topic.
The Bottom Line
$16 million in a single Saturday is an extraordinary accomplishment. It reflects the dedication of thousands of participants, the generosity of donors, and the leadership of the Lurie family and the Eagles organization. Most NFL teams have charitable foundations. Few have built a foundation with the focus, the funding, and the impact of the Eagles Autism Foundation.
Thank you to everyone who participated and donated. You made a difference.
